This is a hacked fare taking advantage of cheap business class fares from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to various destinations and we’ll be using Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam as our stopover destination.
Here’s the background to the deal:
Qatar Airlines have an amazing Golden Ticket Sale on at the moment.
These may be mistake fares so you need to be able to jump on them sooner while they last as their business class fares are pricing out at less than their premium economy fares.

Here’s some examples seen through Google Flights

Ho Chi Minh City to Paris
Qatar is a great option with their class leading QSuite which is being rolled out to routes to/from London, Paris and New York which features a first class style suite in business class. It also appears from the above you would earn 8520 miles on the one way fare.
Qatar Airways was awarded World’s Best Business Class; Best Business Class Airline Lounge and Best Airline Staff Service in the Middle East at the prestigious 2016 World Airline Awards managed by international air transport rating organisation Skytrax.
Getting to Europe or the USA from Australia
Notably UK destinations are excluded as are Australia destinations so you’d need a positioning flight to get you to Ho Chi Minh City (SGN).
Oslo is a popular gateway with people hacking travel to the UK as you avoid the UK’s high priced Air Passenger Duty that applies to premium cabins on flights departing the UK with great connections into the rest of Europe.
Paris, Charles De Gaulle Airport also has extensive connections into Europe. It’s usually cheap to fly around Europe due to the prevalence of low cost carriers such as Easyjet or combine with our guide on buying cheap avios which can be used for short flights in Europe.
Some ideas for getting to Ho Chi Minh City
You could take advantage of United Airlines Buy Mileage Offer that gets you upto 100% Bonus on Purchased Miles until 12th September 2017.
The Deal is as follows:
Buy 5,000 – 19,000 miles and get a 25% bonus
Buy 20,000 – 49,000 miles and get a 50% bonus
Buy 50,000 – 75,000 miles and get a 100% bonus
If we look at the United Award Chart:
The last section is the one we’re interested in. We won’t actually be flying United, but their Star Alliance carrier partners.
To buy enough miles to get to Asia from Australia would require 60,000 miles return on a Saver Award on their Star Alliance Partner Airlines (e.g. Thai) in Business Class or 80,000 miles in First Class
If you were buying to redeem for two seats 120,000 miles would set you back $2257.50 USD which is AUD$2,829.03 at the time of writing (assuming you buy with a no foreign exchange credit card such as BankWest World Mastercard, Coles Platinum Mastercard or ANZ Travel Adventures Card). So the cost would be $1,414.51 per person for the miles.
We’ll need to add in taxes as well so we’ll go the the United Website and search on some routes:
Departing Melbourne September – October 2017
Departing Melbourne November – December 2017
Choosing our Flights
We see below there is good availability of Business Saver Awards on this route
Returning to Melbourne Availability
The flights on Qatar as they are a paid business class ticket can also be credited to Qantas to earn the following Qantas Points and Status Credits:
14,500 Qantas Points plus 260 Status Credits.
You could also credit the miles to other OneWorld Partners. American Airlines is one of our favourites as their award charts tend to be cheaper for redemptions than Qantas.
Putting it All Together
|60,000 miles for Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City (based on two buying)||$1415.51|
|Taxes on the Business Class award redemption||$136.88|
|Ho Chi Minh City to Oslo Business Class||$873.53|
|Typical Business Class Price||$7000|
So the total cost of a return business class from Melbourne, Australia to Oslo would be $2,424.93 per person with a free stopover in Ho Chi Minh City that you could use as a trip within a trip and explore Vietnam
You’ll need to act fast as these deals tend to sell out or get pulled quickly.
